Once a child reaches the end of Year 3, they can apply to join the instrumental music program which encompasses Years 4-6. Once successfully completing a selection process, children can learn to play a woodwind instrument, a brass instrument or specialise in various percussion instruments. Students starting at the school after Year 3 can also apply to join the program on enrolment. These applications are assessed on a case by case basis.
Instrumental music students participate in weekly group lessons during school time and then the school band, once minimum fundamental skill levels are reached. The musical tuition is provided free of charge but there is a levy to cover the consumables and resources associated with delivering the program. Many students in Year 4 can use a school instrument (school instrument levy applies). Purchasing an instrument is recommended for Years 5-7 to allow other Year 4 students the opportunity to take up a school instrument. Students playing an instrument that is considered cost prohibitive can continue to use a school instrument while participating in the program (school instrument levy applies).
